Home > The Shield collection >Nipperwiese
The term "type Nipperwiese" refers to the classification of shields made of bronze. The type is rather small, 37-44cm diameter, round, slightly domed profile, with two concentric ribs, a central boss with a step and two extra loops presumably for a carrying strap. Eight bronze shield type Nipperwiese are known, seven of them quite complete. They are found in a belt from Poland in the east to England in the west. This type of shield is believed to have been used in the early to middle part of the Urnfield period, roughly 1300 BC to 1100 BC.
The Nipperwiese rawhide shield is 44cm in diameter, made from 4-7 mm thick rawhide from cow/ox. The shield is well-suited for swords such as Naue II, Rixheim and Hemigkofen types. Also available painted with a hide-glue-based pigment paint.
